So, my wee one recently had to write a poem for a competition. The theme was World War 2. She chose to write a rap.
It didn't win and she was a bit disappointed but I still think it's so cool. She was 7 in July.
I'm standin in my house
Bombs are falling down
and on my face
I've gotta a big frown
I run to the shelter
and hide myself with care
and when I get out
I hope my house is still there
Now I'm on a train
I'm an evacuee
I bet my poor mum is goin to really miss me
Now I'm at a station
I'm feeling alright
but when a farmer comes along
I get a big fright
He doesn't look happy
to have to look after me
I hope he remembers
to give me my tea.
World War 2 was a scary time
I've done all my rapping
so that's the end of my rhyme.
Hee hee!!
So anyway, she had to write a description of a setting for homework this week.
She was given a picture of an old, empty house.'Here's what she wrote:
On Spooky lane, down Frightful Drive there is an old deserted house. It has boarded up windows as well as a broken down door that swings open and shut even though there is no wind.
In the over-grown garden there is a ruined well and the bucket clanks from side to side like there is a ghost pushing it. Sometimes you can see bats swooping round the falling in roof.
It feels frightening if you go there and every now and then you might hear a ghostly cry that sounds like a howling wolf in pain. Every night there is a terrifying shadow in the biggest window where the mum and dad used to sleep! It looks like a vampire with long sharp fangs!
I thought this was wonderfully imaginative...sadly that night she couldn't sleep because she'd spooked herself with her own writing!

HeeHee! It is quite a feat to scare yourself into not sleeping with your own writing. Wait. . . .
E's creative writing skills do not surprise me. I could tell she was wonderfully imaginative and full of life when I had the pleasure of meeting her. Imagination is not the only strength she exhibits with her writing. She is amazingly empathetic for a seven-year-old.
I am very proud of her too.

She's a wonderful writer and writes (or raps) very descriptive pieces.
Her WW2 rap reminds me of Charlie Booreman's movie Hope and Glory. The opening where the kids are playing in the bombed out remains of London will stay with me. And the idyllic and sometimes silly (for city kids) country scenes after they go to live with their grandparents.

Very impressive, especially for a 7-yr-old. I'm around some that could read well at 7, but none that could write anything like that. You deserve to be very proud

You know, I was on a course today KOF that said the best child writers are the ones who are avid readers.
Strangely El isn't a voracious reader although she loves to be read to. Her teachers have noticed how she bucks the trend! That's my girl!! Lol

It's a very good movie. Another like it (another movie about WW2 memories by a director is Tea with Mussolini by Franco Zeffirelli)
